About me

I have drawn and painted ever since I can remember, constantly doodling on my school jotters and plastering my bedroom walls with as much colour as powdered poster paint would allow.

My hobby became full time work when I graduated from the University of Warwick with a first class honours degree and I worked as a secondary school art teacher in the Coventry area.    I like to drop in the “first class” bit every now and then, especially if I am struggling to work out how to operate a mobile phone.

In 1986 I moved to South West Scotland where I combined motherhood with employment as an art tutor for the Dumfries and Galloway adult education scheme, teaching drawing and watercolour painting to adults.   This peripatetic role would have me zooming from one end of the county to the other in my mission to prove that anyone can paint and draw, given the necessary instruction.

I opened my own art school at Jacob’s Ladder, in the Machars, in which I was happily employed for over 10 years.    A big dollop of life propelled me to change direction and I now work from a fantastic light filled studio in my beautiful home overlooking the beach in Port William, happy and fulfilled in my role as a professional artist.    I paint watercolours to sell as prints on my website, write and illustrate children’s books,  tackle commissions and do the occasional community arts project.  It’s a varied, if somewhat precarious, existence with many empty fridge moments but I wouldn’t have it otherwise.

I designed the Bonnie Beltie bag 2 years ago which I have printed in Kolkata, India and export all around the globe – an unexpected success and my first step into merchandising.

An opportunity to illustrate a children’s book “The Belties of Curleywee Farm” for a local publisher led me, ultimately, to set up an indie publishing company “Second Sands Publications” in 2012 and in that year I published “The Trail Of The Pointy Toed Pyjama Thief”, a fun filled romp of a tale which had me grappling with the finer points of photoshop.   “Boo, Where Are You?”, followed this year and is a look and find book featuring a cute little belted Galloway calf.

My art prints fly out all around the globe and my children’s books and beltie bags sell well in 30 retail outlets in Dumfries and Galloway and beyond.   It is a full time job keeping on top of this modest enterprise and I am continually working towards the next publication.   It may be a micro business but this is just the start…..global domination beckons!
